THROAT SINGING
The punk rock Siberian 'throat music' was tremendous - although I lack the vocabulary to adequately describe the tremendous growl of the lead singer (think Laibach, but without the electronics and absolutely no ebb in the growl).
Musically, they played very punchy stuff - at various times akin to Ska, heavy metal or rambunctious Celtic reels... but always in a way that it would have fit quite well with a Conan soundtrack.
The female lead wasn't with them this time - but judging from their CDs she would have added an eerie quality to the performance, reminiscent of haunting Celtic voices like Sinead O'Connor in her better moments.
The Esplanade has a sample track here.
The Ghost of a Flea has more on throat music here.
And, if anyone is interested, Yat-Kha has a list of North American tour dates here.
