Heartless bastard South Korean President Roh Moo-huyn has decided that letting North Korean refugees flee that wretched country isn't helpful to 'reunification.'

In an awkwardly translated item in the Chosun Ilbo, the South's unification minister comes close to apologizing for its recent airlift of North Korean refugees from Vietnam an unnamed Southeast Asian country:

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said Sunday, "I regret that at the foundation of the lull in the intra-Korean relationship are the condolence (for late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung) issue and airlift of North Korean defectors to South Korea."

There have been other reports, which I can no longer find in South Korean papers, stating that Vietnam the unnamed Southeast Asian country has just started repatriating North Korean refugees. I doubt this is something that they would do without the assent of South Korea.

Although North Korea is nominally a fellow communist state, South Korea is a major foreign investor and trade partner with Vietnam Southeast Asian countries. Money generally trumps ideology.
