TRUCKIN'
While some of the neighbors have some trouble in containing terrorism - particularly Indonesia - Singapore is determined not to be a 'soft target.'
In its latest announcement, Singapore said it would by the end of this year require all trucks carrying hazardous materials to be fitted with a global positioning system (GPS) device for tracking. As well, it will require these trucks to be equip with a device that will allow civil defense officials to remotely disable vehicles that stray from designated routes.
The system they are working on would allow for the tracking of up to 10 000 vehicles simultaneously.
While there has never been an attack carried out here, given its close relationship with the US, Singapore is more worried than most other Southeast Asian countries about being a target for terrorism. Justifiably so, as several plots have already been thwarted.
I doubt the same sort of measure could be carried out in larger countries (given the costs that it would impose on businesses I would question whether it should be) but if this works it is something that could be useful in other small nations like Israel. It's also kinda' keen in a sci-fi sort of way.
